NECN videographer Dave Brosemer catches sight of some lovely moose in Greenville, Maine. They must be used to cars and people stopping to look, because they didn’t seem to mind having their pictures taken!

The new animal welfare specialty license plate for the state of Maine is now available for purchase. The new plate directly supports the health and welfare of Maine’s companion animals.
The plate features colorful silhouettes of a cat, dog, rabbit, horse, and bird with the slogan “respect. love. adopt.” It can be purchased at BMV branch offices as well as town offices that issue license plates. Drivers will pay $20 for the plate the first year and $15 every year after that for renewals.

This story comes as a complete disappointment to me. A bill to make it a crime in Maine to posses animal fighting equipment has been killed.
The House of Representatives voted today against the measure, which had previously received a favorable Senate vote.
As amended by the Senate, the bill would have made possession of a dog-fighting pit a crime.
Opponents of the bill said there’s no evidence of dog fighting in Maine and that a law is not needed.

I have the Massachusetts version of this, so I was so thrilled to hear about the Maine one!
Governor John Baldacci has signed a law that creates a new specialty license plate to benefit the state’s Animal Welfare Program.
The plate features colorful silhouettes of a horse, dog, cat, rabbit and bird, with the words “respect, love, adopt” imprinted in a gold-colored strip along the bottom.
The Sun Journal of Lewiston says the plates will be available Oct. 1.
Drivers will pay $20 for the plate the first year and $15 annually after that. Of that fee, $5 will go to the Bureau of Motor Vehicles with the rest going to shelter.

Gail Crowell of the Animal Welfare Society is looking for a good home for Guy, a 4-year-old male lab mix. He came to the West Kennebunk, Maine, shelter via their Paws Across America program. He was malnourished upon arrival, but has packed on the pounds since that time.
