This story comes as a complete disappointment to me. A bill to make it a crime in Maine to posses animal fighting equipment has been killed.
The House of Representatives voted today against the measure, which had previously received a favorable Senate vote.
As amended by the Senate, the bill would have made possession of a dog-fighting pit a crime.
Opponents of the bill said there’s no evidence of dog fighting in Maine and that a law is not needed.

President-Elect Barack Obama is currently working to fill positions in his administration. Among them is the Secretary of Agriculture. This Cabinet member has a huge impact on the treatment of animals and the enforcement of animal-related laws. If you would like to send a message to President-Elect Obama about this issue, you can do so via the Humane Society of the United States. It is important for us to urge the president-elect to consider animal protection a priority when appointing his secretary.
