Cutting the calories (and the table scraps) may be one of the most important things we can do to improve the lives of our pets.
But if those puppy dog eyes are getting in the way of a strict diet – you may just need some tough love from the Jenny Craig of the animal world.

A mother cat is nursing a puppy Chihuahua and she doesn’t mind one bit. The caring cat is at the Halo Animal Rescue in Phoenix, Arizona.
Heather Allen runs the shelter and says the mother of “Liam,” the Chihuahua, died shortly after giving birth last month. “Marla,” the mother cat, also a resident of the shelter, gave birth to four kittens about the same time that Liam’s mother died. Allen slipped Liam into the cage with the other kittens and Marla let him nurse. Allen says Marla treats Liam like one of her own. He’s black just like her kittens so he blends in well.

Jonah in his bed resting at Angell Animal Medical Center
A blind Chihuahua puppy is undergoing preparations for brain surgery at Angell Animal Medical Center later this week in an effort to save his life.
The eight-month-old puppy was discovered in early September at the bottle recycling center of the Jamaica Plain Stop & Shop. A Good Samaritan brought the dog to the MSPCA-Boston Animal Care and Adoption Center.

MRI of Jonah’s brain. The white area would normally represent a brain, in this case it is all fluid. The brain has been pushed to the outer edges of Jonah’s skull.
Angell staff neurologist, Dr. Andrew Farabaugh assessed the Chihuahua puppy and suspected that he was suffering from a severe case of hydrocephalus, commonly referred to as “water on the brain,” however tests were required to appreciate the full extent of the congenital disease. In order to monitor the puppy around the clock, Dr. Farabaugh and his team fostered the Chihuahua for several weeks as more information could be gathered.

A baboon in northern Kentucky is doing well after being rescued from a home in Jessamine County. Animal control says 24-year-old Suzie had been living in a cage in a garage there for 24 years. The owners got her at five and a half months and as she continued to grow, she apparently became too much for them to handle. An anonymous tip led to the rescue.
