Allergic to cats? Why not adopt a rabbit?

Posted By: Allison Sonfist | April 20, 2009 at 10:09 am

You may be familiar with retired greyhounds — but what about retired Easter bunnies? They’re just some of the rabbits up for adoption through the House Rabbit Network of New England. Network President Suzanne Trayhan explains why so many pet owners have fallen down the rabbit hole — and fallen in love with these complex creatures.

Fun fact: A four-pound rabbit will often drink as much water as a 20-pound dog.

Can’t adopt right now? You can also help the House Rabbit Network through an upcoming fund-raiser at Giggles Nightclub in Saugus, Massachusetts.A

The House Rabbit Network is a great organization. My husband and I adopted our French Lop, Spencer, from them this past December (2008). He’s settled right into our household and thrives off of pats and attention. He loves when our goldendoodle, Daisy, visits him as well.

That video was fantastic!! Short, but gave a great deal of information, such as a point I have been trying to make with my own relatives and friends, that rabbits are INDOOR pets!! I have so many arguements regarding this point. Especially because I love to have them running around with me in the house where I can see them all the time. If they were outside at the back of my home, I would rarely get the chance to interact with them and I would be constantly worried about their well-being and health. I love each and every one of my bunnies and you are correct in pointing out that they all have their very own personalities!! I noticed the differences in them when they were much younger than a year, however. I have 10 of them (all related) and I would never give one of them up no matter what!! They are just as dear to me as any dog or other pet that I or anyone I know has ever known, and I just feel that there is just nowhere near enough credible information about them out there in the public eye, such as your television slot. I live in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, and I sure wish someone here would put this kind of information out on television where people here could actually see it and truly learn about them. I really feel strongly that more and more people would opt to own a bunny over another pet if they really understood who and what they are and how to truly care for them. In my opinion, they are so much easier to care for and train than any dog or cat. Thank you so much for being there for this beautiful, loving, and graceful creature!! :)

Hi Charmaine — what a great email, and a great attitude about animals — especially bunnies.
We truly appreciate a note like this because you’ve hit on exactly what we want the show to be — a serious source of information about all kinds of animals and a celebration of our bond with them.
Our “regulars” and our guests are all people thoroughly dedicated to the animal world — and usually smart and funny too.
If you get the chance, please upload some pictures of your rabbits to our site! (and, btw: this is a TV show, not just an internet site. The show is on NECN and carried all over New England, but we’re glad you saw it from Calgary!)
    Thanks,
    Vicki
