Controversy brews over man and his moose

A controversy is brewing in Vermont, centered around a man and his moose. The moose has been cared for on a farm since he was a baby, and now acts much like a pet. But, owning wild animals is illegal in Vermont, and the state is trying to enforce that, but not without criticism.

Service dog owner calls for help

When Judi Bayly stopped breathing in her sleep, her Irish Setter Lyric dialed 9-1-1. That call saved and changed her life. Bayly began training service dogs and giving them to others with disabilities.

Now, it’s Bayly and her dogs that need a life line. Divorced and recently evicted from her house, Bayly survives on social security benefits and is scheduled for bladder and colon surgery next month. Bayly needs someone to help care for her dogs.

Police bust bird fighting operation in Conn.

Seriously? What is wrong with people? Police in Shelton, Connecticut, have uncovered an illegal bird fighting ring — and these birds were canaries and finches.
Many of the birds were mutilated.

19 people were arrested.

First panda from frozen sperm born in China

China has announced the first successful birth of a panda cub from artificial insemination using frozen sperm. This gives a new option for the infertile endangered species.

Female panda You-You gave birth to the new cub Thursday morning at the Wolong Giant Panda Research Center in southwestern Sichuan. It is You-You’s third baby, and the 10th panda cub born at Wolong this year.

Artificial insemination is commonly used for breeding pandas, which have a very low sex drive. In 2006, 34 pandas were born through artificial insemination in China and 30 survived – both record numbers for the endangered species. The technique has also been used at zoos in the United States.

30 bills impacting animals

In Massachusetts, there are more than 30 animal- and pet-related bills being considered at the State House. The subjects range from domestic violence issues and pets to a change that would require that a “bittering agent” be added to anti-freeze to prevent pets from lapping up the sweet poison. (There are also bills that affect wildlife controls and hunting.)
